UPSTREAM · HARVEY ALTERNATIVE
For law firms paying $1,200–$2,000+/seat/mo · 20-seat min · AmLaw 200 / Am Law 100

Harvey is GPT-4 with
a legal CSS theme.

Harvey AI's outputs come from OpenAI and Anthropic — the same APIs your firm could call directly. The "Harvey" part is legal-flavoured templates, citation handling, and matter context. We rebuild it on your direct enterprise billing with SOC 2 + matter-attorney privilege boundaries. Same workflow, 85–95% less spend, your firm's documents never leave your tenancy.

Math compounds with seat count: at 100 attorneys on Am Law 100 pricing ($1,500/seat/mo), Y1 reclaim crosses $1.7M. At 200 attorneys, it crosses $3.5M.

The math · every firm size

Harvey charges per attorney. Anthropic charges per token.

Harvey's per-seat enterprise pricing scales linearly with attorney headcount. Claude / GPT-4 token cost scales with actual usage — and your firm's actual usage is much lower than Harvey's pricing model implies.

Harvey enterprise pricing per public reporting (2024–2026 range). Direct numbers based on Anthropic Claude Sonnet 4.5 ($3 input / $15 output per 1M tokens) at typical legal workload (10–25K tokens/document averaged). Past 50 attorneys, the rebuild pays back inside Y1 with margin to spare.

What we'd build instead

Three layers. Tenant-isolated. Privilege-aware.

A Next.js app your IT team can security-review in one sitting. Documents stay in your encrypted bucket. Prompts and outputs never leave your tenancy. Matter-level access controls match your firm's existing privilege walls.

LAYER 1 · UI
Legal workspace
  • Matter-scoped chat + draft mode
  • Document review panel (redlines, summaries)
  • Brief / contract / memo templates
  • Citation-aware output (Bluebook format)
  • Privilege walls — partner / associate / paralegal
  • Time-entry export to Clio / iManage
LAYER 2 · ROUTING
Model + retrieval
  • Claude Sonnet 4.5 default · GPT-4o for image
  • RAG over firm's document repository
  • Citation verification pass
  • Token budget per matter / attorney
  • Audit log of every prompt
LAYER 3 · BILLING
Direct enterprise accounts
  • Anthropic enterprise contract (yours)
  • OpenAI Platform API (yours)
  • Both with signed BAA + SOC 2
  • Zero data retention contractually enforced
  • Per-matter cost reporting for client billing

Hosted in your AWS account (HIPAA-eligible, SOC 2-inheriting) or on-prem. Document repository can integrate with iManage / NetDocs / SharePoint / your existing DMS — not migrate from it.

The "Harvey alternatives" listicles miss the point

Why we don't recommend the obvious alternatives.

"Harvey alternative" results: Spellbook, Legora, Robin AI, Casetext (now Westlaw AI). All wrappers over the same APIs Harvey wraps. You're swapping middlemen, not removing one.

PATH A · Switch to Spellbook / Legora
"Cheaper Harvey."
Spellbook is ~50% cheaper than Harvey today. Same wrapper economics. Within 18 months their pricing rises and you're re-doing this analysis.
PATH B · Casetext / Westlaw AI
"Bundled with research."
Useful if you already pay for Westlaw. Doesn't solve the wrapper-margin question — Casetext sits on top of GPT-4 with the same per-seat pricing structure.
PATH C · ChatGPT Enterprise
"We'll use raw GPT."
No matter context, no privilege walls, no DMS integration, no Bluebook citations. Your associates will hate it. ChatGPT Enterprise is closer to "give up" than "Harvey alternative."
PATH D · Self-host LibreChat
"OSS legal AI."
LibreChat exists. Generic chat UI, not a legal workflow. Citation handling, RAG, privilege walls, DMS integration — all on you. Often 2–3× the Allied build cost in internal hours.
PATH E · Negotiate Harvey down
"Just push back."
Some firms negotiate Harvey down 15–25% on multi-year contracts. Wrapper margin is 90%+. Negotiation captures 1/8 of the value rebuild captures.
Questions about a Harvey rebuild

"What about…"

What about privilege + ethical screens?
Built in. Matter-level access controls match your firm's existing screens — same partner/associate/paralegal hierarchy. Anthropic and OpenAI offer zero-retention enterprise contracts; your prompts and outputs are not used for training and are not retained server-side. Stronger posture than most third-party legal-AI vendors.
What about hallucinations / fake citations?
Citation verification pass is part of the build. Every cited case / statute is checked against an authoritative source (Westlaw, Lexis, Caselaw Access Project, or your firm's precedent DB) before output. If a citation can't be verified, it's flagged or removed. Stricter than Harvey's default behaviour.
What about ABA / SRA model rules?
The build conforms to ABA Formal Opinion 512 (2024) on AI use, SRA guidance for UK firms, and major bar association statements. Documentation provided as part of delivery. Compliance posture is stronger than Harvey's because data residency is fully under your control.
How do we handle Westlaw / Lexis access?
Both have API access for enterprise customers. We integrate via your existing Westlaw / Lexis enterprise contracts — research output flows from authoritative sources, not from generic web scraping. Your existing legal-research stack stays intact; the AI workspace becomes the primary entry point.
Will partners actually adopt it?
Same UX patterns as Harvey — chat / draft / review modes — so the muscle memory carries over. We do a 1-week pilot with 5 attorneys before firm-wide rollout. If partners don't adopt the UX, we iterate before you commit. Adoption pattern matches Harvey's because we're rebuilding the same workflow.
Who owns the code?
You. Pushed to your firm's GitHub from day one. Allied BizTech retains no rights and no copy. Documents and prompt data stay in your AWS account or on-prem environment — never on Allied infrastructure.
